Boosting industrial biotech in the EU: France to host IBISBA, a research infrastructure managed by INRAE

PRESS RELEASE - In spring 2024, France became the designated host for the future European research infrastructure dedicated to biotechnology, IBISBA-ERIC . This European initiative supports research and development, and spurs industrial innovation. Working through its national nodes present in a large number of European countries, the broader objective is to intensify the development of EU biotech, thereby furthering the global transition to a circular bioeconomy. France’s national node, IBISBA-France, operates under the aegis of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research. The node is led by INRAE and is composed of teams from CEA, CNRS, INSA Toulouse, the University of Nantes, and the University of Aix-Marseille.

Coordinated by INRAE, IBISBA-France is composed of six partner organizations that perform R&D focused in a variety of application areas. These include bioenergy, chemicals and materials manufacturing, food and feed ingredients, cosmetic compounds, pharmaceutical and phytosanitary products, environmental services, treatment of liquid and solid wastes, and the recycling of various materials and residues.

In 2026, IBISBA-ERIC aims to become operational with a mandate to support R&D in biotech by federating the strengths of a variety of European stakeholders. IBISBA serves as a single access point for a rich array of services provided by its expert R&D partners present in 11 European countries: France, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

In March 2024, the European Commission published a series of actions to boost biotechnology and biomanufacturing. In its communication, the European Commission cited IBISBA, stating that it is expected to play a key role in increasing EU competitiveness in the biotech industry, notably by providing a service network and digital repository to support R&D activities. By providing new impetus and driving innovation, the European Commission intends to encourage long-term investment in infrastructure, skill building, and job creation, while striving to eliminate scientific, technological, and legislative barriers.

TWB focuses on industrial biotechnologies to provide biocontrol and biostimulation solutions, future challenges for agriculture

With the advent of the harvest in France, it is worth recalling the European Commission’s wish to make agriculture compatible with the preservation of the climate and biodiversity. It recently announced its “farm-to-table” strategy, which includes a target of a 20% decline in fertilisers. How can we achieve this? By relying on innovative “green” solutions dedicated to the agricultural sector.
Among these solutions are biocontrol and biostimulation: these methods use natural mechanisms to protect crops. As an expert in industrial biotechnologies, TWB wishes to strengthen its contribution to the development of these fields, in which several projects have already been initiated. Here is a review of these sustainable agricultural initiatives.

INRAE and WUR reinforce their collaboration on digitalisation, biotechnology and robotics

PRESS RELEASE - As part of the state visit of the President of the French Republic to The Netherlands, France and the Netherlands have expressed their willingness to strengthen the European strategic autonomy in an open economy, by signing a Pact for Innovation and Sustainable Growth. INRAE and WUR welcome the adoption of this Pact, which will develop a structural dialogue and boost public-private cooperation in key economic fields for the twin digital and sustainable transitions, including agriculture and food. To support the implementation of this Pact, INRAE and WUR signed today a joint statement to strengthen their existing collaboration on digitalisation, biotechnology, sensing and robotics applied to food, agriculture and the environment, to foster the needed transitions in the agrifood sector.

TWB expands its industrial biotechnology solutions by partnering with Processium and Syngulon

PRESS RELEASE - TWB, an expert in the management of R&D projects in industrial biotechnologies, sustainable and innovative solutions, expands its range of services by joining forces with Processium, a recognized expert in the design, development and optimization of industrial processes, and Syngulon, a startup in synthetic biology applied to industry. With these two new integrated offers, TWB optimizes the support of projects led by hosted startups and those led in partnership with actors of the industry. The technical and economic studies carried out by Processium allow to validate the viability of a project each step of the way. From the R&D phase to the production stage, Syngulon's expertise allows to increase the efficiency of the microorganisms and ensure their compatibility with the industrial environment.
